Dos & Don'ts of Moving IT Equipment
Moving IT Equipment can be an extremely stressful and complex process. If it is not carried out properly, it can cause a loss for your business in terms of time and money. Put simply, if your systems aren't working, or your phones aren't ringing your company may cease to function effectively. Your job is to make the transition safe, straightforward and without downtime.
If you're moving office, take these steps to make the IT Relocation aspect of your move as stress free as possible.
DO
Use an IT Relocation Checklist to establish exactly what IT equipment needs to be moved to the new office.
DO
Use an IT & Telecom Solution Provider to carry out this critical part of your office move for you. The process of an IT Relocation is far more complex than it first appears.
DO
Think about your phones and phone numbers in advance of your move. Telecom providers work to stringent lead times. So if you need to order any new phone lines or ISDN lines get your order in at least 10 weeks before you move day.
DO
Ensure you have appropriate transit insurance specifically for your IT equipment, and technological devices. Even minor damage may lead to irreversible damage to your valuable equipment.
DON'T
Forget to back-up your valuable data before you move. Never assume it's safe just stored on your PCs. A professional back up is well worth the cost when you consider the value of all your hard earned and valuable data.
DON'T
Allow staff to pack or move their IT equipment. This is best left to a professional IT Relocation Solution Provider who understands the complexities of packing and moving such equipment. More importantly, they'll be insured in the event of anything going wrong.
DON'T
Assume your new office is set up according to your technical requirements. Servers, phones internet, email, broadband, wifi all need to be considered well in advance of your move so that the IT infrastructure is in place (and working) before you move in.
DON'T
Forget to recycle any redundant IT equipment responsibly, or donate to charity anything that is still working.
It's important to remember that moving IT equipment is an extremely complex operation, and should not be taken lightly. If you leave it to the pros, and prepare far enough in advance, the process should be fairly painless and you won't have any system downtime.
