How to plan a successful IT relocation
Planning an office move is a large task, but making sure your IT equipment is transported to your new office space safely is imperative to the future success of your business. Broken equipment equates to loss of earnings, so it is important that this aspect of the move runs successfully.
Planning your office move at least 6 months in advance will help to minimize stress levels and ensure that your staff are well prepared when it comes to the big day. See our tips below on how to ensure your IT move runs smoothly.
Shop around
IT connectivity is a competitive industry so it is well worth shopping around before you decide which company to enlist to fit your IT infrastructure at your new offices.
Obtaining several quotes from different vendors could mean you benefit from a faster connection for less money than you are currently paying. Before you sign up to any new IT package, always make sure that it is flexible enough to accommodate growth or a change in your business.
Pre-arrange your connection
Whether you are changing vendors or transferring your existing connection, make certain the new IT connection is finalised within a few days of your office move. Be aware that new connections can take time to be delivered and set up depending on the type of product you have, the location of your new office space and the type of building you are moving to.
Survey the building
Organize a visit to your new office as early as possible with the IT company you intend to use. They will be able to assess the building layout and the existing IT infrastructure so that your business can get up and running as quickly and successfully as possible.
IT experts will check whether the building has structured cabling, where the servers will be located, and whether air-conditioning will need to be installed to cool the servers.
Plan an out-of-hours move
Good planning is half the battle when it comes to the successful implementation of IT equipment. You can also reduce downtime significantly by planning a move out-of-hours or over a weekend. Make sure you have staff available and willing to help oversee the move and test the new setups.
