Rules for a Company Relocation
Moving office can be one of the most stressful things your company can go through. And although there is no one answer to ensure all company relocations go smoothly, there are a number of practices followed by companies whose office moves have had a smooth, successful and happy outcome.
No matter how large or small your company is, you'll be ahead of the game if you live by these five essential rules for company relocation.
Rule # 1 Be Clear about what you want
You need to be clear about your office space requirements so that you don't waste time trepsing around unsuitable properties, and land one that doesn't fulfil your needs. Think strategically about what your business needs are (both now and in the future) and write down your priorities of what your new office space needs to fulfil.
Rule # 2 Plan Ahead
Don't underestimate the sheer amount of planning and hard work a company relocation requires. Download the Office Move Checklist to give you an idea of what tasks need to be done and plan accordingly.
Rule # 3 Make realistic estimates of your likely costs
Most new businesses either forget about marketing, overhead costs, income taxes or build out costs or greatly underestimate them. Use the Moving Office Budget Planner to get on top of your costs and make a realistic estimate.
Rule # 4 Understand the importance of IT
Pay particular attention to the relocation of all your IT and phone equipment. These are things that enable your business to function efficiently, and they need to be fully working by the time staff arrive to start work in the new office.
Rule # 5 Prepare yourself for the Worst
Imagine the worst case scenario during your relocation and make a plan as to how you're going to deal with it. Okay, it's unlikely to happen, but contingency measures work at their best when you think the disaster may just happen.
