Strategic Office Space Planning
Given that we spend at least one-third of our day in an office, it makes sense to ensure that our office environment is as comfortable, inspiring and productive as possible. Good office space planning can create dynamic workflow and improve productivty; so whether you are moving to new offices or re-planning your existing one it pays to do a little strategic office space planning to work out the best configuration of your space.
Here are some office space planning tips to help you think strategically and practically when it comes to deciding who sits where:
Minimum Space Between Desks
Don't overcrowd your office, it can hamper productivity. Instead, make sure you allow enough office space for the amount of staff you have (use the Office Space Calculator to do the math). This will allow enough space in between desks which will give everyone ample space to work comfortably.
Safety Measures
Health and safety is an important consideration when planning your office space. This not only includes the appropriate ergonomic office furniture, but also the correct degree of lighting, ventilation, and heating all contribute to a healthy office environment.
Convenience
Everything within your office space needs to be seen from the workers' perspective. And this can only be achieved through close consultation with staff prior to your office build out. For instance, what does each worker need on their desks to carry out their tasks efficiently? Whose best placed to share a printer? What size desk does each worker need? Do they actually need an assigned desk or can their work hotdesking if they are out of the office for long periods of time? All these things need to be thought through when deciding your office space plan.
Supporting Collaborative & Individual Work
Assess how your teams interact with one another and create different permitations of workspace models to see which one will work best for everyone. Some team members may require a quieter area of the office to carry out more concentrated work, whilst others need to be in the hub of things to interact with others. By thinking strategically about your office space plan, everyone's needs can be accommodated.
